McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act
The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act was signed by President George Bush on January 8, 2002 after it was reauthorized on December 10, 2015 as part of the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015. This federal law focuses on the education of homeless children and youth and was in effect on October 1, 2016.
If a child or youth due to a loss of housing or economic hardship, must live in a shelter, hotel or motel, vehicle, campground, on the street, in abandoned buildings, in substandard housing or share the housing of others, and who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence may be considered homeless. If this is so, then the child or youth is eligible to receive services provided under the McKinney-Vento Act.
If you believe this applies to your child, please contact Wyoming Indian School District McKinney-Vento Liaison Pamela Gambler to determine eligibility. She can be reached at 307-332-9765.
This image representing our McKinney-Vento plan has several symbolic meanings embedded in it. The circle is all inclusive. All are welcome in our house. Our original home was a tipi which is circular. In this picture, there are doors at each direction - North, South, East, West - which are open all the time. The stars at night (the dark blue section) are for the unaccompanied youth so they will have a safe place to sleep at night. Like the buffalo, none of us do this alone. It takes all of our teams to watch out for our students, from the littlest to the biggest. ~ Artwork by Leslie Myers and Jenn Runs Close to Lodge.
It is the practice of Wyoming Indian Schools to ensure all children, including children and unaccompanied youth who are in transition are provided the opportunity to a free, appropriate public education and have access to the same services offered to other children.
